Surgery for Appendicitis

Acute Appendicitis (Laparoscopic Appendicectomy)

Acute appendicitis is a common disease that can occur at any age. Commonly, patients start by having ‘gastric discomfort’. Eventually, the pain localises to the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Clinical examination with tenderness in this area gives rise to a suspicion that can be conformed with a CT scan. The usual advice is surgery for acute appendicitis. However, there have been recent studies to indicate that treatment by antibiotics may benefit some patients.

Surgery is commonly performed by Laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery. Laparoscopic Appendectomy/Appendicectomy are commonly performed with low risks and complications. The advantages of a Laparoscopic Appendicectomy are more than just cosmetic or quick recovery. The Laparoscopic examination allows good visualisation of the surrounding vicinity and sometimes the symptoms may be due to other causes like ovarian cysts etc. These can also be addressed easily with the Laparoscopic Technique.
